What is Serzone?
SERZONE (pronounced sir-ZONE) is a medicine used to treat
depression. SERZONE is thought to treat depression by correcting
an imbalance in the amounts of certain natural chemicals,
such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which are in your
brain. Serzone is produced by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.
Serzone’s generic name is nefazodone.
What is the Danger?
According to the FDA database at least 20 people have died
of liver failure, and 55 have had liver failure as a result
of taking Serzone. A consumer group, Public Citizen, says
that the total figure of illness and death is probably
much higher. Serzone’s packaging does warn patients
of liver damage risks. In fact, it has a black-box warning
that liver damage is a risk. However, Serzone is banned
in Europe and Canada. Australia and New Zealand are banning
it as from May, 2004. On May 19, 2004, Serzone manufacturer
Bristol-Myers Squibb finally discontinued the distribution
of Serzone in the United States.
